The GCC, Egypt and Africa are often grouped together as "the region", yet the buyers behave very differently. Saudi and Emirati audiences reward premium, native-feeling video and fast service; Egyptian audiences are highly price- and value-aware and live on Facebook, TikTok and WhatsApp; African markets such as Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa are mobile-first with wide variation in purchasing power. This playbook is how I plan across them after managing more than $200K in ad spend.
| Platform | Main job | Where it shines |
| TikTok | Discovery & demand creation | Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, younger audiences |
| Snapchat | Reach & demand creation | Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC |
| Meta (Facebook & Instagram) | Scale, retargeting, WhatsApp conversations | Everywhere — strongest reach in Egypt and Africa |
| Google Search, PMax & YouTube | Capturing active intent | High-ticket and urgent services |
| LinkedIn | B2B decision makers | Industrial, SaaS, professional services |
| X | Conversation & trends | Saudi Arabia, news-driven and B2B topics |
When each channel has a clear role you stop asking "which platform is best?" and start asking "what job is still undone in the funnel?"
Creative rules that work in the region
- Speak the dialect. Saudi, Emirati and Egyptian Arabic each land differently. Match the voice-over and captions to the market — and keep English versions for expat and B2B audiences in the UAE.
- Vertical, native and fast. 9:16 video, a hook in the first two seconds, real people, on-screen text for sound-off viewing.
- Show proof early. Reviews, before/after, delivery speed, warranties and local presence reduce risk for first-time buyers.
- Respect culture and seasonality. Ramadan, Eid, White Friday, national days and back-to-school reshape demand and costs — plan creative weeks ahead.
- Build a testing matrix. Test hooks, angles and offers deliberately rather than random new ads; keep a log of what wins.
Design for WhatsApp conversations
In the GCC and Egypt many buyers prefer to ask a question before they buy. Click-to-WhatsApp ads, a WhatsApp button on every landing page and an instant, personal first reply often convert better than a long form. Treat the chat as part of the funnel: track it as a conversion, tag the source and measure revenue per conversation.
Notes for African markets
- Mobile data costs matter — keep landing pages extremely light and fast.
- Payment options shape conversion: cash on delivery and mobile money are often essential.
- English, French and Arabic campaigns may all be needed depending on the country.
- Start with Meta and Google for reach and intent, then test TikTok as audiences grow.
Tracking that the algorithms can learn from
Browser tracking alone misses a growing share of conversions. A solid setup includes GA4 and Google Tag Manager, the Meta Pixel plus Conversions API, TikTok Events API, enhanced and offline conversions in Google Ads, and CRM events — qualified lead, deal won — sent back to each platform. When the algorithm sees real sales, it finds more buyers instead of more form-fillers.
Scaling discipline
- Prove unit economics first. Know your target cost per acquisition from margin and lifetime value before scaling.
- Scale in steps. Increase budgets gradually on winners and watch cost per result for several days before the next step.
- Consolidate. Fewer, larger campaigns give algorithms more data than many tiny ones.
- Refresh creative before fatigue. When frequency rises and click-through drops, rotate in new hooks — not just new budgets.
- Report on revenue. ROAS and cost per customer by market, platform and angle — not vanity metrics.
The region rewards advertisers who localise deeply, respond quickly and measure honestly. Get those three right and every additional dollar works harder.
